The
great saint Lama Tsongkhapa, the founder of Gelugpa tradition in 1409,
first established the Great Prayer Festival known as Monlam Chenmo. The
establishment of the Great Prayer Festival is considered as one of His
Four Great Deeds. It celebrates the miraculous deeds of Buddha
Shakyamuni when He destroyed evil forces with his supernatural power.
The first prayer was held in Jokhang, the central cathedral in Lhasa.
Tsongkhapa invited all the people of Tibet to a two-week-long festival
of prayers, auspicious rituals, teachings and celebrations, from the
first new moon day until the full moon of the first month in Tibetan
Calender. The great prayer festival commemorates the Buddha's spiritual
victory over evil forces by his accomplishment of miraculous power, and
his attainment of enlightenment.
